Children’s Art Classes

The Art School

For 15 years  Young Artists have been offering children’s art classes that aim to develop a love of art and creativity while laying a strong foundation in visual art. Your child can join the class any time during the term.

Throughout the term, your child will learn new skills while creating artworks in response to a range of subject matter from their world and studies of famous artists. They will experiment with a variety of media – pencil, charcoal, clay, ink, paint, pastels, aquarelles, glazes and recycled items. Strong basic drawing and the design principles are encouraged.

Each child receives a Merit Certificate for each year of art classes completed at Young Artists. Milestone trophies are given after 5 and 10 years of art classes here.

Our age appropriate art programs change from term to term so that the children stay interested and challenged.

They vary from juniors to seniors to allow for age, ability and different interests. The teachers at Young Artists are qualified art educators with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Art Education which means they have studied child psychology and know the best methods to teach each individual child.

About Our Classes

Art Classes: All Ages!

In this class, the students engage with a wide range of quality mediums/materials including drawing, clay sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, and painting! They learn the fundamental techniques for each medium and learn to utilize them to create beautiful artworks they can take pride in.  We encourage the students to experiment with materials they take interest in, and nurture them in their artistic exploration. The students focus on various age-appropriate themes and styles, creating multiple artworks each term that they can take home or even display in our school! This class is available for children from preschool to high school, with each age group having a tailored curriculum designed by our qualified and dedicated teachers.

Drawing Classes: 7-18 years!

If your child has an interest in everything drawing, then this class is for them! In our Drawing classes, students use quality materials such as charcoal, pencil, pastel, and coloured pencil to create drawn artworks using various skills and techniques.  The students engage in drawing from observation, images/photographs, and imagination, and focus on multiple age-appropriate sketching/drawing artists. The children also look at perspective and proportion and how this can be successfully depicted through drawn artworks, a valuable skill to any artist! We encourage creative drawing and welcome all experience levels.

Manga, Anime, and Cartooning: 9-18 years!

My Hero Academia, One Punch Man, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and many other favorites! If your young artist enjoys any of these shows or likes the idea of creating their own Manga and Anime character, this class is for them! Our Manga, Anime, and Cartooning class offers students an opportunity to learn to draw their favourite characters or their own creations by deconstructing the anatomy of these figures into easy-to-follow steps. The young artists will learn the unique style of manga, anime, and cartooning, and how to replicate this in a drawing of their own using quality pencil, inking pens, coloured pencil, and professional grade markers. The teacher will explore a diverse range of age-appropriate artists such as the renowned Studio Ghibli!

Digital Art: 9-15 years!

Modern age art created through the screen! This class delves into the wonderful world of Digital Art, and its endless possibilities. Young artists are guided by our experienced teacher in their choice of digital art programs like Pro Create and Ibis Paint, and will learn all the tricks and techniques to start becoming a master of digital art! Our Digital Art class goes into multiple features of their programs like various brush types, layering, blending modes, and even animation. The students will learn to utilise these features to create amazing digital artworks, no matter their experience level. Our students need only bring their tablet or laptop, stylus, and creativity to class!

What will a Digital Art student need?

  • A usable tablet or iPad and stylus – Laptops can also be used.
  • A digital art program: Our teacher recommends Procreate or Ibis Paint X.

Illustration and Character Design: 11+ years

In this class, students will be introduced to advanced drawing skills such as perspective and foreshortening. It’s perfect for students who are passionate about animation, character design, and cartooning (including manga and anime), and who want to hone their visual storytelling abilities. By learning to effectively communicate your ideas through your drawings, you’ll be better equipped to bring your characters and narratives to life! Students in this class will use quality pencils, inking pens, coloured pencils, and professional-grade markers.

The high quality of teaching in our art classes is reflected through the many art awards our children win every year in various art competitions. Some of the competitions our students have won first place in include the Sydney Royal Easter Show Arts and Crafts exhibition, AGNSW Young Archie awards, the Castle Hill Show, Young Australian Art awards, Threatened Species children’s competition, Hills’ Design an Ad and the Sydney Children’s Hospital Faces and Masterpieces competitions.
